Winson Green pharmacy scoops national award

LloydsPharmacy Winson Green, Birmingham, has won the company’s Pharmacy of the Year award for 2013.

Serving a community that has gained TV notoriety of late after being featured in Channel 4’s ‘Benefits Street’ the high street pharmacy came out top of some 1,500 stores UK-wide.

Clement Chapajong, pharmacy manager for the Winson Green branch, said: “Our team is motivated and passionate about making a difference to people’s lives.

“Between us we can speak 11 different languages and that has really helped us to interact and build trust with a community that has a high immigrant population.

“We are very pleased to be recognised for the work we do.”

Winson Green was chosen out of five national finalists that had to take part in team building activities before presenting to four judges from LloydsPharmacy and GSK.

They were judged on performance, team ethic, community engagement and that special element that made them stand out from all other UK stores.

Clement and his team have integrated into the community with regular visits to community centres and care homes to help people manage their health. This was one of the inspiring factors picked up on by Andrew Clark, pharmacy controller for hosts and award sponsors GSK.

Andrew said: “For two companies whose shared mission is to inspire positive lives and enable people to do more, feel better and live longer, it’s hardly surprising that the event has been going for more than a decade.

“At GSK we are proud to be associated and I know that the pharmacies who have been crowned regional and national winners are all very proud of their fantastic achievements.”

UK managing director, Cormac Tobin, said: “I was very proud to be part of the judging panel and to witness first-hand the passion and commitment demonstrated by all of our pharmacy teams.

“It was evident to all of the judges our teams really understand and care for their patients and customers. All teams performed exceptionally well and the judges had great difficulty in choosing the overall winner. I for one really enjoyed the event and look forward to next year’s final.”

The activity day and awards dinner were held at the Albrighton Hall Hotel and Spa in Shrewsbury. The runners up were Strawberry Place in Swansea, The Delamere Centre in Manchester, Wrexham Road in Slough and Oatlands in Bristol.
