It’s time to recognise those unsung heroes

Cormac Tobin, Managing Director at Celesio UK, including LloydsPharmacy

A few weeks ago I announced our new charity partnership with Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer Scotland. The partnership fits entirely with my belief that Celesio UK has the potential to help support everyone affected by dementia; patients, families and their carers, throughout our organisation.

Our support of unpaid carers is something I am extremely passionate about. Carers provide a vital role in the support of patients living with a number of conditions, not just dementia, which is why again this year we are launching the LloydsPharmacy National Carers Awards. Working alongside Carers UK, we want to acknowledge those carers who work tirelessly to help others.

These awards are designed to recognise and celebrate those people in our communities that go above and beyond; they put other’s needs before their own and tirelessly provide support and care on a daily basis.

At last year’s awards I was extremely humbled by those carers I met. They were unsung heroes; without their work and support our health service would not exist as it does today. Unpaid carers provide assistance to people, who without their support, may need to seek formal medical support. In fact Carers UK has estimated that carers save the economy £119 billion per year through the unpaid support they undertake.

The award winners were much more than carers; they have their own lives, including families and jobs, but commit time to help friends and family members where they need support. I was in awe of their dedication, hard work and devotion to providing the best possible care they could.

Nominations for this year’s awards are now open, and I sincerely look forward to hearing about the dedicated care the nominees undertake.

I look forward to meeting and thanking this year’s unpaid carers, celebrating their amazing work.

To nominate someone you think deserves special recognition for their role as an unpaid carer please visit LloydsPharmacy here. The deadline for nominations is 31st July 2015 and the awards ceremony will take place in London on the 10th September 2015. Proceeds from the event will be donated to Carers UK.

The winners will receive an expenses paid break in London, staying at a luxury hotel and attending a gala dinner where they will be presented with a trophy. They will also receive £1,000 worth of high street vouchers.
