Cormac Tobin, Managing Director of Celesio UK, including LloydsPharmacy.
LloydsPharmacy recently asked 2,000 people around the UK “How are you today?” to gauge the health of the nation. I don’t know about you, but I found the results a bit of a worry – on an average day we only feel 61 per cent well. Surely we should be feeling better than that?
When we delved into the issue with some more detailed questions, we discovered some more revealing truths about how much the general public know about pharmacy and how it can help them.
While 30 per cent of respondents said they turn to their GP in the first instance if they have any health concern, only six per cent would go to a pharmacy first.
The survey findings also show that the biggest reason for putting off seeking help for a health problem is being worried about wasting other people’s time. This is understandable given the pressures on the NHS, but rather than not seeking advice at all, which can lead to greater problems down the line, we, as patients, need to get better at knowing where to seek the most appropriate advice.
Pharmacists have five years’ training and can advise on a wide range of ailments and health issues. Whether it’s coughs, colds, upset stomachs or trouble sleeping, your pharmacist can help. They can also provide a range of services to help people stay on top of their health and avoid the need for emergency treatment – including blood pressure checks, Type 2 Diabetes testing, asthma control checks and cholesterol measuring.
Clearly we have some way to go before community pharmacy is widely viewed as a first port of call for health care advice. However, we will continue to promote the benefits of pharmacy across our 1,500 LloydsPharmacy branches. We’re ready to provide solutions and relieve some of the pressure that other frontline NHS services are under.
Following our How are you today? survey, we launched a daily health check and health MOT on lloydspharmacy.com, to help patients manage their own health in the long term. It’s good to feel well – but we believe that more people can feel even better with the help of LloydsPharmacy.
