Get your nominations in for the LloydsPharmacy National Carers Awards

Cormac Tobin, Managing Director at Celesio UK, including LloydsPharmacy

This week I was reminded just how unsung our unpaid carers actually are and the momentous support they give back to the community.

Research, carried out by our charity partner Alzheimer’s Society and conducted with 1,013 GPs, revealed that three-quarters (77%) of doctors believe that their dementia patients are forced to rely on care from family, friends and neighbours or other unpaid carers to get by due to lack of support from health and social care services.

Alarmingly, a quarter of doctors (27%) admitted they were reluctant to refer people with suspected dementia due to these support services not being in place and 23% of GPs felt they had insufficient training to manage a dementia patient [1]. The survey results are astonishing, and even suggest that diagnosis rates may be affected due to lack of access to services.

Perhaps, based on the above research, it is unsurprising to learn that carers are estimated to save the economy £119 billion per year through the unpaid support they undertake, as noted from Carers UK.

Celesio UK is a big advocate of supporting all those affected by dementia, including unpaid carers. I want to make LloydsPharmacy stores dementia friendly environments, supporting the needs of those living with dementia along with their family, friends and carers. I believe we, as a community pharmacy provider, can provide crucial help and support to those that truly need it.

A few weeks ago we announced the launch of the LloydsPharmacy National Carers Awards that acknowledge those carers who work tirelessly and selflessly to help others, and it is now more imperative than ever that we pay tribute to these unsung heroes and give them all the support we can. Nominations for this year’s awards are now open; please nominate any unpaid carer you feel deserves to be celebrated for their hard work and commitment in caring for somebody else.

To nominate someone you think deserves special recognition for their role as an unpaid carer please visit LloydsPharmacy here. The deadline for nominations is 31st July 2015 and the awards ceremony will take place in London on the 10th September 2015. Proceeds from the event will be donated to Carers UK.

The winners will receive an expenses paid break in London, staying at a luxury hotel and attending a gala dinner where they will be presented with a trophy. They will also receive £1,000 worth of high street vouchers.
