AAH Pharmaceuticals has launched a 50 hearts challenge for its All About Health members.
The goal is to encourage pharmacies to achieve a target of 50 blood pressure checks between the end of Know Your Numbers Week (September 16) and December 1.
In addition, members have the chance to win £500 for their chosen local cause.
Not only does this encourage improved health within the community but also allows independent pharmacy staff to engage with their customers on which local cause should be the beneficiary of £500, Stephen Spillett, channel marketing manager for the company, said.
“Know Your Numbers Week is a fantastic platform for raising the awareness of blood pressure checks each year. To maintain the momentum we decided to work with our members and encourage them to challenge their patients to understand the health risks while putting something back into the community.
“It’s as much about what matters locally to the patients as it is the staff,” he added.
“The patient signs a heart on a big pledge plaque once they have had their blood pressure checked and this goes towards the final total.”
Two winners will be selected at the end of the campaign with members obtaining prize draw tickets once they have completed 10, 25 and 50 checks.
Pharmacies have received their five-foot high pledge plaque while the campaign is supported through social media channels. The All About Health Facebook page has hints and tips, competitions and also pinpoints the nearest participating pharmacy.
John Davidson of Davidson Pharmacy in Billingham has taken on the challenge and hit the 50 checks target in one day; by taking the service to his annual town carnival.
He said: “We took the pledge plaque to the Billingham carnival and set up a tent to do blood pressure checks.
“It was very striking and we were kept busy all day. We had to refer a few. Those that had travelled from afar we referred to their GP while others came back to our shop on the Monday. It served as a great way to interact with our community.”
