With unprecedented pressure mounting on GP surgeries this winter, LloydsPharmacy is launching specialised clinics to support customers with minor ailments and injuries. First Care Clinics are being trialled in three LloydsPharmacy stores in Coventry, Tolworth and Birmingham. They will give people a much needed alternative to walk-in centres or GP surgeries for care.
A recent report found that minor ailments such as coughs and colds, headache, eczema and indigestion take up 20 per cent of a GP’s workload, costing the NHS £2 billion per annum¹. With family doctors warning that patients could be forced to wait longer to see their GP this winter², services such as the First Care Clinics will be even more important to the public.
The First Care Clinics have been designed to offer customers a quick and convenient way to get treatment and advice for minor ailments and injuries. No appointment is necessary and costs for treatment are low. The clinics will treat a range of minor injuries and ailments including blisters, burns and scalds, cuts and grazes, eye infections and cold and flu.*
How the First Care Clinics work:
- Customers using the First Care Clinic will receive a one-to-one consultation with a trained healthcare professional. The customer’s injury or ailment will be assessed and they will be required to fill out a brief customer record
- If the injury or ailment can be treated at the First Care Clinic, the pharmacist or technician will carry out the necessary treatment. If the customer is being treated for an injury which requires extra dressings ** and/or pain relief medication, these will be supplied along with a full explanation of usage
- The customer will be given self-care advice and a patient information leaflet. If a follow-up appointment is required, this will also be booked
- If the injury or ailment cannot be treated at the First Care Clinic, the customer will be referred on to their GP or relevant service.

“Some people don’t seek advice at all and self-treat injuries and ailments but don’t always use the most effective treatment or for the right length of time. We would encourage local people to pop in to see us for professional advice to better manage these problems and help them recover more quickly.”
