Cormac Tobin, managing director of Celesio UK, has welcomed the publication by NHS England of toolkits to support the commissioning of influenza vaccination, emergency supply and support for self-care services from community pharmacies.
Cormac said, “I am pleased that NHS England is giving its support to the Treat Yourself Better campaign and encouraging local commissioners to work together to make best use of community pharmacy.
“NHS England has acknowledged that community pharmacy is underutilised by the NHS and that needs to change. I hope local commissioners in England will heed the advice from NHS England and work with LPNs to understand how community pharmacy can best help with winter pressures.
“Too many people are still presenting at A&E departments and GP surgeries with conditions and self limiting ailments when they could get the support, advice and treatment they need at their local community pharmacy.
“Lloydspharmacy, for example, offers patients a free pain assessment service enabling people to get advice and support at a time convenient to them without having to book an appointment with their GP.
“As the accompanying report states community pharmacies are highly accessible as they are located in the heart of communities where people live, work and shop”.
